“MMMM!” Puck paused over his plate of scrambled eggs prepared with cheddar and tarragon – an Oxbear specialty – but he wasn’t looking at the eggs. “MMMM!” he said again, loudly.
This time, Oxbear took the bait. “What?”
Puck eyed the tray of cinnamon rolls being iced on the counter – it’s still vacation; we can have that. “I can’t wait for those sugar rolls!”
You know I don’t serve American breakfast staples often enough to my boys when the eight year-old doesn’t know the official name of a cinnamon roll. I think, also, part of him was afraid that he was going to be left out of the equation. Eight rolls, two parents, four rolls apiece…
“Sure, you may have one,” I generously allowed him. “You, however,” I could see Yali was also eyeing the rolls with a significant amount of baby greed.
“Please let him have one, Mom!” Puck tore off a piece, waiting for my verdict.
“Well…”
Yali screamed his agreement with the older brother. So the younger brother got a small taste of “sugar roll” for breakfast.
Anyway, I think they were a hit.
Carrie-Bri and I were back at the ballpark that evening for a fresh attempt at a winner, now that we had carted over a brand new Cardinal from the Indians organization by the name of Brandon Moss.
Turns out we had signed ourselves up for a ridiculous four hours of baseball. Probably the most ridiculous game of the season to date, in fact. About the time our occasionally highly immature and very young Dominican starting pitcher, Carlos Martinez, flipped off the Rockies’ dugout – a gesture we failed to witness all the way up in the nosebleeds – we had already seen several series’ worth of drama on the field.
As the clock ticked on, the Rockies announced their closer of the game – John Axford – a former Cardinals reliever known for purchasing camel costumes for his teammates in honor of “Hump Day”. At this point we were down two runs and it didn’t look promising. Until we tied it and loaded the bases. John Axford walked in the winning walk-off run. It wasn’t exactly how we hoped it would end, even if the Cards left with the win.
As red fireworks announce our 65th victory of the season, we filed out of the stadium on a somewhat sour note somewhere after ten o’clock. We had plenty of fodder for Monday’s podcast already.
