A Birthday for the Clam

Although it was only six days into summer, it seemed to Collette as though it was nearly half-over. Diana had already been back from Wheaton for nearly two months and she would be back there before she knew it.

Meanwhile, there was tutoring to be taken care of, though Rose would be teaching 5-Day Clubs for the next four weeks. But somehow things had to get done…

Meanwhile, Rose was quite enthralled with her gifts, including a new and improved backpack edition of the nuclear emergency disaster kit. Grandma had also given her various things at the Elvis concert including a fuzzy caterpillar pillow. She also received a horse statue from Linnea. And for the last – a bottle of perfume – Curious. The remainder of the evening was spent watching “I Love Lucy” episodes from her new first season set.

On the way back home, Mom had dropped by Wal-Mart for some items. Collette waited for her in the car, still tired. At one point, a man with a dark mustache walked out the front door rather methodically, quoting (what Collette thought was Shakespeare) to himself, very loudly and angrily and pointing his finger to the heavens. A couple in black followed him. Collette’s first inclination was to wonder why they were dressed so nicely on a Monday morning – no church, most likely no weddings. A Bar Mitzvah? Then she thought it was most likely a funeral. It was odd to watch people sometimes.
