A Little Bit of Labor
Elvis placed one foot somewhat tentatively into the kiddie pool, swirling with handfuls of green lawn clippings. With the help of both uncles, the kiddie pool had turned water park with the tiny plastic jungle gym sliding right into the cold water on a warm, muggy Labor Day afternoon. Elvis pulled the foot back out. He wasn’t so sure he was ready to join his cousins. Puck splashed him a few times to get him used to the idea. Elvis giggled. Then he tried again, but once again retracted the foot.
“This is taking longer than World War II!” Puck declared after awhile.
But eventually, right as Yali was ready to towel off and retreat upstairs for toys, Elvis joined the water party.
It hadn’t been a completely lazy day on my part. Earlier in the morning I dropped the boys off at the Silverspoon’s so Carrie-Bri and I could record Episode 69 at the Big House. Towards the end of our recording session, Rose handed off a treat in our studio: crunchy Reeses cups.
When I rejoined my boys at the Silverspoon’s, Curly and Lulu – in town just for the day – were knee-deep in fish taco fixings. I’ll admit I must be missing out on something pretty good with my lack of smelling capabilities, because the oohs and aahs were extensive over the sauce and the guacamole and the fish and the carbonated cherry juice, etc. At least I think it was cherry. I can’t always tell. The tacos were good, and technically, I can smell. I just usually have to concentrate harder than I care to work for it.
Then of course there was the pool, the boys discussing business in the living room, homemade brownies from Izzy’s pastry chef girlfriend … Oxbear thought he’d be clever and tell Izzy to text her:
“So what box mix did you use?”
The reply came quickly: “Oh, he didn’t!”
Anyway, we got home in time for Yali to fall asleep 45 minutes late, a precursor to keeping me up half the night for who knows why, really. Greasy hash browns/bacon dinner belly? Forgetting to belch after his bottle? Stuffy nose from the weather change? Sometimes it’s not worth trying to figure it out unless it happens again.
