All Hallow's Eve
The celebration of All Hollow’s Eve was a strange one, obviously tainted with the sadness of Mr. March’s funeral.
Father of nine children, the youngest only two. And, as they had done seven years before at Edred’s funeral, the choir sang the benediction.
Collette stayed at the house with Puck, where things were quiet and golden, and the kids continued their lessons.
During the morning, Linnea had found an expired mole in the backyard and graciously buried him in a Ding Dong box after Francis had lit the funeral pyre next to its final resting place.
The trees were finally flocked in dark reds, flaming oranges and yellows, brilliant scarlets, golds, and hazelnut. And although the sun rose in golden orange through the trees that morning in an eerie rise of chilling Halloween skies, not everyone felt like the day was very… Halloween-ish.
Puck had a cold, sleepy eyes. Carrie had been invited to several events, but didn’t feel up to any of them.
Although Mom was going to have a bonfire that night, and pizza, and would likely supervise Linnea and any other little trick-or-treaters over for the evening. And Francis had been invited to a Halloween party with Creole, at a friend’s house from church.
Puck didn’t nap a wink that day. Mom set him in his play pen to take a snooze while she took a nap herself. Apparently, instead of slipping off into la-la land, Puck talked to the bedpost, and spun around in circles until he became dizzy. Then he did it all over again.
The evening was still warm. The Plums arrived just after Dad had also come back where five boxes of Cecil Whittaker’s pizzas were already set out on the counter.
Carrie did a rush job on Linnea’s costume. She was joining Hansel (a mummy) and Gretyl (Sarah Palin) as an Egyptian princess, complete with Carrie’s Smithsonian Institute beaded collar, black and gold Egyptian scarf, and black and turquoise eye make-up.
They would return later for the bonfire, hot chocolate, and popcorn, where the rest of the family, including Wally, Lolli, and Juliet were already gathered.
OLeif and Collette returned home with Puck in time to hand out candy for three rounds of trick-or-treaters. It was a good night to be out.
