And OLeif Returned with Stories

Friday, June 16, 2006

OLeif was coming home that afternoon after four days of battling it out with the naturally evil tendencies of young girls and boys. But alas, such tendencies arose in people of all ages, and were only more carefully concealed in the older ones.

Collette missed Hungary desperately that day. For a moment she was back there again on the great hill, above the city – the warm sun of July in Budapest, hundreds of stone stairs and forests above the river and the bridges. The great stone statue, arms spread, looking over the Hungarian people. The pinnacle of the city – what a beautiful place it had been.

OLeif and Jimmy and the junior high arrived back almost precisely at 2:00 that afternoon as scheduled. OLeif looked rather pink upon arrival, having forgotten his sunblock. And apparently the senior high girls (who had a slumber party extravaganza the night before) had called up the junior high at the camp and had sung to them The Brady Bunch theme song with the junior high names inserted. OLeif told of all the stories, including dragon tail bruises and crazy contests involving smashed watermelon and hot dogs topped with peanut butter cups.

Coffee followed with Marcus Bee and his Father, Addicus and Molly, Ben-Hur, Mom, Joe, and Rose, the great Stan-O, Bob B., and several others as the boys and Starr played and Joe did the sound. Afterwards there was a viewing of the chokingly funny, rather disturbing – Nacho Libre. And that was the way the evening commenced.
