Father’s Day – the day the Boy Scouts always seemed to manage to leave for Scout Camp. Theodore and Denae were to drive them down.
In Sunday School, when John Smith defined “abomination” as a type of bomb, Collette tried not to laugh. And when OLeif messed up miserably playing in the wrong key to begin a song during the service, Collette laughed behind her bulletin, as did everyone else. And she laughed again when Scott Hamilton walked up to them after church on the way to his car and greeted them with,
“Well, hello, my maybe future in-laws!”
It seemed to be a day for the chuckles. And there were more on the way to drop off Judah and Evangeline at the airport. They discussed how miraculous a thing it was that only two people could manage to constantly keep dishes in the sink, and of how Collette was getting better at eating vegetables after Judah scared her off with a story the year before of his gym teacher who stopped eating vegetables and his colon began to bleed.
“And so Collette started eating raw spinach,” OLeif said.
“That’s like going in cold turkey – nothing to everything,” Judah said. “Brussel sprouts, now!”
And then he and Evangline hurried off to catch their 1:50pm flight to Denver for a twelve day sojourn with Evangeline’s family reunion. And back at the house, Carrie had decided to dye her hair dark again, finally.
“Holy cow!” She yelled from the bathroom shortly later. “It’s turning purple!”
But in the end, it was not purple, but dark brown, and they were all able successfully to leave to drop off Grandpa Snicketts’ Father’s Day card and then to Cracker Barrel. Followed the movies for Carrie’s first chance to see Nacho Libre and that was Father’s Day.
