And Yet Another Interlude

Mass chaos. Sound chaos, that is.

This is lunch at school on a late Monday morning. Between serving up dino chicken nuggets, potato triangles with ketchup, canned pineapple, and Oreos, I sat with Puck for awhile at the table. The kid across from me made his dino nuggets attack each other with roars.

Then Puck said, “So, Mom, don’t you have to get back in there and work again?”

I know when I’m not wanted.

After lunch was finished, I left in a downpour. The deluge had increased to maximum proportions as I crossed the bridge and included myself in the many travelers flashing their hazards in narrow lanes high above the river. Tornado Watch.

When I picked Puck up from school, he had news for me.

“I told Mr. V. that my aunt was a meteorologist and a pilot,” he told me importantly.

Well … close.

We discussed Heaven on the way home.

“We could jump into the river where the whirlpools are and it wouldn’t bother us at all. That would be fun looking at fish for hours,” Puck was saying. “Do you think we’ll sleep in Heaven?”

“I don’t know if we’d have to sleep in Heaven because we won’t need to repair our bodies. But it might still be fun to take a little nap.”

“Yeah. Maybe we wouldn’t need to blink in Heaven either. But I hope so. I don’t want to get dry eyes. Heh heh. ”

“I guess we won’t get dry eyes in Heaven. But maybe we’ll sleep. I just don’t know.”

“Yeah. Fran would be sleeping a lot, I guess. I would wake him up to do something fun and he’d be like, ‘Dude. We’ve got all eternity for that. Just give me one hundred more hours for a nap.’”

Rose came over at five. Mom made omelettes and corned beef sandwiches, and Dad cut up more ice cream cake before the four sisters invaded his office for another recording session.

“I don’t know … an artist or a scientist.”
