Passover. Why Easter had been so much earlier already, Collette was unsure.
Puck had his third birthday celebration at the Silverspoon’s that afternoon after church, which included a bag of dried banana and strawberry bits and a large squishy kick ball labeled with flags from around the world.
After barbecue and a short nap for Puck, Denae brought out a dish of brownies with two candles, one for Curly and one for Puck. Curly held back the eager Puck as he tried to take swipes at the flames. After singing “happy birthday”, Curly helped him blow out their candles together.
That evening, Joe came over to study and Rose worked on her school project, editing photos with OLeif. Afterward, Rose joined Joe on the couch with a bowl of strawberries and a plate of sugar.
“Could we spend the night?” Rose asked, joking around.
“Yeah!” said Joe.
He put his arm around Rose and they started bouncing up and down like two year-olds on the couch, chanting:
“Spend the night! Spend the night! Spend the night!”
Unfortunately, Rose had not yet set down her plate of sugar.
“Oh no!” she cried.
Sugar went everywhere.
After clean up, Rose retook her seat and watched a documentary of inmates and prison officers.
“When we return: time for shake down…” said the narrator.
“Oh, good, I love shake downs,” said Rose.
“Have you actually ever been in a shake down?” Collette asked.
“Oh, yeah. Once, when Carrie tore up my room looking for candy.”
