April 25
Before Collette and Puck had left for the morning, OLeif was bald again. He was starting to look like a gladiator.
“What are you doing?” Collette asked him.
He was outside on the patio with the electric shaver, trimming heaps of hair off the top of his head, in the reflection of the sliding glass door. He was looking a little scary.
“I told you I needed a hair cut.”
Puck watched him in awe.
“Yeah, but I didn’t think you were going to take it all off again.”
Later, while OLeif finished trimming the last patches in the bathroom, Collette looked out the door where fluffs of hair blew around in the early morning breezes.
“Looks like something died out there,” she said.
Puck could also use a hair cut. He hadn’t had an official one yet, and it was getting close to being time.
Over at the house, Carrie had news.
“So, Rose was asked out at college.”
“Again?”
“Yeah. But this is how it happened. She had found a toad on campus somewhere and was holding it. First, she had found a frog, and then she saw the toad, and went for that instead. So this guy is walking her out to her car while she’s holding the toad and says, ‘So, do you want to go out?’ And Rose is like, ‘Um, no, er, I, uh, have… a boyfriend…’ And she said it was really quiet and awkward, and then the toad jumped out of her hands.”
Rose came stomping into the kitchen before class, brushing her teeth.
“Someone stole my rings at pottery class,” she announced.
This included her ring from Egypt.
