Back to the house.
Linnea was beginning round number one of SAT tests 2010. There would be a total of three days of testing. And she would be proctored at church. Mom had volunteered the first day of watching the little kiddos in the nursery, so Puck marched off with her for three hours of playing ‘wiff dah babies’, as he liked to put it.
So for three hours, Collette worked with Francis on his studies, while Carrie studied cold comets, or as she expressed it, ‘I like how they try to make these things sound extra exciting by calling them ‘Ice Worlds’ with seven exclamation points after it…’
Somewhere in the later part of the morning, OLeif messaged Collette to let her know that his contract had been extended to an offer as a permanent position. This was good news of course. And he would accept the offer that day.
When the lunch hour had arrived, the crew returned from church with a happy Puck while Collette prepared a batch of shredded paprika chicken for Francis’ lunch… the boy who had an insatiable appetite for chicken.
After Puck’s nap, Puck plopped himself on the counter ready to help his Sun make cookies.
“What kind of cookies should we make, Puck?” Carrie asked him.
Puck thought for only a moment. “Shiver… shiver… shivering cookies,” he said with a big grin. “Cold cookies.”
One could only presume that he thought of the cookie dough being refrigerated before use.
Meanwhile, Francis, Creole, and Puff ‘o Lump were off on a bike ride to Dairy Queen, and then the bridge. This was after they had left a giant potato gun set ready to launch into the neighbor’s yard, for no very particular reason.
After the cookies had been rolled in brightly colored sprinkles (of which Puck snuck more than a few into his mouth) and placed in the oven, Collette, Carrie, and Puck adjourned to the back patio, where Carrie worked on planting Linnea’s fresh rose bushes and a pot of mint, which smelled delicious. Carrie promised Collette a cutting of it once it had begun to flourish.
Puck also did his part by watering the new plants from a plastic pitcher on the back step.
Before returning indoors for Puck’s bento dinner, Collette had also shown Puck the little white airsoft pellets that lay strewn all over the backyard.
“Look, Puck,” she told him. “Baby moons. They fell from the sky.”
“Can I have some?” Puck asked, picking them up out of the mud.
Speaking of moons… Carrie told Collette that one of Uranus’ moons was also named Puck.
That night, after family worship, OLeif was off to church for practice, where Judah was newly returned from paternity leave.
