Away for Sunday

In which OLeif has made special plans…
A fragmented three hours of sleep the previous night sent Collette to church in a bit of a daze. Not too dazed to forget about packing the last of their over-night bag, or Puck’s. But dazed enough, all the same, to spend a certain portion of concentration on not falling asleep at various points of the morning…
Judah was looking a little Amish again Sunday morning, just like the old days. He addressed this fact before Sunday School…
“There is a debate going on as to whether or not I am growing a beard, or whether things have been so hectic that I have not gotten around to shaving yet…”
Puck returned from Sunday School excited about the goodie bag from his teachers, which included chickadees cheese crackers, a ring pop (or ‘diamond candy’, as Puck called it), and blue sidewalk chalk.
Back to the house, briefly, where…
The weather was cooperating in an untimely way for February.
Mom and Puck got out the fishing game.
Hymns were playing on the record player.
Rose was still at church.
Joe was requesting Jack-in-the-Box shakes after returning from the 8:00 service to draw on his bamboo board. He was not feeling poorly enough, however, not to walk through the living room performing an odd Egyptian dance for no reason.
Francis and Linnea-Irish returned shortly later from having helped set up the sanctuary at church for the evening’s festivities, bringing with them Little Caesar’s for lunch.
And Mom and the girls had finished putting together the ice cream basket for the youth silent auction at the fundraiser that night.
“Well,” Carrie was teasing, “our church is so rich that at our fundraisers, we buy things for you.”
The evening of talent show fundraising efforts promised to house all the usual oddness and ridiculousness, which could only be expected by such gatherings. Even a fire eater had offered his talents, which could not be performed due to certain regulations and fire codes…
“Well, he could have done his fire eating at our church,” Carrie teased.
Meanwhile…
Puck was to spend the night at the house while OLeif and Collette took a weekend away from home together, for the first time since Iceland of 2009.
And for the first time, OLeif had decided to keep the plans a surprise, except for, of course, the promised 3:00 performance of Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis at the Symphony, Collette’s favorite Classical piece of all time. That was a good way to start things off.
