Before Departure

In which OLeif recovers and Mom and Dad make final preparations to go abroad…

OLeif was out of the shower by seven and feeling worlds better.

There had been a light dusting on the ground in the night, a wink of the powdered sugar layers that had fallen on Saturday.

Over at the house…
Puck eagerly helped himself to a bowl of LIFE, despite the oatmeal, banana, and milk he had already enjoyed at home.
“All the cats had baths,” said Rose. “Smell Snuggles.”
A fluffball in the face. But Collette had to admit that he did, for once, smell decent.
“Can I smell?” Puck asked gleefully.
Linnea was busy coaxing Mom into letting her have chickens.
Boxes of ice cream sandwiches in the freezer.
A golden pound cake in the pantry.
“Agh,” said Carrie. “Some of the ingredients in this thing are the same ingredients they use in Victoria’s Secret body lotion.”
Suddenly things weren’t quite as appetizing.
Dad returned from his run.
Francis returned from turning in work applications and saw some Black Hawks taking off.

For the afternoon…
Carrie made turmeric milk with ginger.
Linnea was busy teaching Puck the capitals of the world…
“What’s the capital of Egypt, Puck?”
“It’s… uh… holly jolly Christmas!”
“No… it’s Cairo, remember? What’s the capital of Ethiopia, where baby Hesed’s going?”
“It’s a… holly jolly Christmas!”
“No. Addis Ababa. What’s the capital of Morocco?”
“Holly jolly Christmas this year!”

And in other news, Puck was going to have his sixth female second cousin. Puck and all the girls at Christmas again…

Mom and Dad were leaving the following morning. All bags were packed and last-minute details were attended.
A walk for Mom, Collette, and Carrie in the cool evening.
And after goodbyes were said, it was off to pick up Puck from church for the night.

Linnea was spending the night for the following few evenings. So she accompanied them home for the night, where, after Puck was snoozing, she and Collette watched the second part of the BBC’s Pride & Prejudice with a Hershey’s bar for Linnea.
