Beginnings of the Loot

In Snicketts Land, it was once again time for lessons. Linnea was temptingly distracted by her pillowcase of candy from Sunday evening.

“Look at all I got,” she grinned.

The contents of the pillowcase spilled onto the counter. Linnea began dividing the little packages into categories.

“Come on, Linnea, time for math,” Mom called from the dining room.

“Aw, but I’m dealing candy!” Linnea called back.

“Close the shop for awhile.”

“Oh, alright. Shop’s closed.”

“But I want something,” said Frances.

“Shop’s closed,” Linnea said firmly. “No candy.”

She placed her pillowcase over the candy mound. As if that would stop a candy-hungry boy.

“Check this out,” said Rose. “I’m going to be this for Halloween.”

She pulled a mask on to her head, an old piece from Carrie-Bri – red skeleton in black hood.

“Either this,” she garbled through the mask, “or a white sheet ghost. I’m thinking the Charlie Brown version.”

Frances was sitting at the counter muttering something about magazine subscriptions being “money gobblers”.

“I know what I’m going to do,” he said. “After Halloween, I’m going to take all of my candy and sell it back to kids for twenty dollars a pound. Black market.”

While Mom, Collette, and Linnea headed out to Trader Joe’s, Rose kept an eye on the little bear. She set him up in his bouncy while she finished her masterpiece.

“What color should I paint the moon, guys?” She asked Puck and Linnea. “Yellow or white?”

To keep her creative juices flowing, Rose sneaked back a box of packaged marshmallows intended for hot chocolate.

“Wow, did I just eat four packages of those marshmallows?”

Rose, as they all knew, had a habit of eating raw things formerly intended as garnish and/or baking mixes.
