Changeup

The day wasn’t destined to go as planned. But what is life without a little change-up?

First, Vacation Bible School volunteer meeting. I think I recall the last thing I said to El Oso before he dropped me off being:

“I hope they don’t have us sit in a circle again and give our name and favorite flavor of ice cream.”

No, not ice cream. Rather: “favorite thing to do at the beach.” I guess I was the only mom who didn’t list “relaxing and watching the waves” as tops. No, mine was “digging in the sand,” which was also Irish’s top pick. Anyway, once that was over, we got the usual two-hour run-down, my part playing registration with Ivy and two of the other resident grandmas at Old Church. I’m sure Ivy would appreciate that reference.

My afternoon was not destined to pan out. Those prime tickets somewhere behind home plate were meant to go unused due to some miscommunication with the CMO of Brown Shoe. Unused on a day where top prospect Oscar Taveras made his MLB debut in the rain with a home run in his second at-bat.

Instead, we drove over to the Silverspoon’s for a more traditional afternoon that also did not include the original plans to see Henry Butz take the stage in Henry V at Shakespeare in the Park. (Carrie and I still agree on mandatory name change in his circumstances. No matter how famous.)

Gloria and Theodore were at a client meeting to start. So the boys made vegetables in the kitchen. Puck, standing on the counter raiding the spice cabinet, saw an invaluable opportunity when El Oso gripped his mom in a bear hug on the couch:

“MAMA SANDWICH!!!! YAAAAY!!!!”

And not just once, but three times:

“YAY! LET’S DO IT AGAIN!”

The bruises I suffer for my boys.

Puck ran around the yard a few times before barbecue. Eventually he opened the deck door, and looked at me seriously:

“I stopped along the way to help a worm.”

:pause for applause:

“I had a feeling it was going to get burned and I flipped it into the grass.”

:door slam:

The afternoon became evening. Game win. Rain. Thunder. Izzy got back from shooting an outdoor wedding right before the storm. Then Gloria had a great idea: Silky’s frozen yogurt down the street. Toppings on the side. So for a day that didn’t work as planned, still got the good stuff.
