Cinco de Mayo
Wednesday, May 5, 2010
On Cinco de Mayo, Ben-Hur was turning twenty-one in Columbia. Another one of the old kiddos to cross the threshold into adulthood. It was pretty crazy.
Meanwhile, Collette sat with Francis on a drive up to Walgreen’s for an emergency batch of eggs for breakfast. For organic oat pancakes.
“Oh. No. Mom!” Francis moaned. “Not healthy pancakes!”
“Six grams of fiber in every serving,” Mom sang out in her usual cheerful voice. “Francis! Come back with my pancake mix!”
The rest of the morning was spent on tutoring, scheduling physicals and mailing psychological evaluations for the adoption, etc.
That afternoon, Linnea-Irish was busy painting floral patterns onto an old pair of shorts with dye from a rubber stamp pad and a long knitting needle before she left for gymnastics.
The day was warm. And nice. While Francis and Creole did yard work, Collette and Carrie-Bri took Puck on a walk to visit his ‘mouse house’ and to look for frogs in the little puddles in the ditches. Carrie found one fat one for him. And he picked dandelions. Then, back at the house, Carrie took him up in the treehouse to hang the birdhouse that he and Linnea had painted together.
Later on, Mom returned with Linnea-Irish and Mandarin for about an hour before leaving for youth group. The girls gave a quick update on progression in the class. Linnea had earned herself quite a handful of 5’s on her card.
Then Collette went right out the door to drop off the boys at Puff ‘o Lump’s, while the girls set up Puck with a new Magic School Bus, the series of the season.
Mom had dinner set up when she returned: burrito bar, lime-tortilla chips with nacho dip, and gooey butter cake. In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, of course.
That night, OLeif had a business meeting with RedMapp.
