Come Autumn

Thursday, September 21, 2006

Thursday was cold. Collette had remembered the old man getting his mail from the mail house several evenings before.

“We’re going to have an early fall,” he prophesied, pointing his stack of letters at her solemnly.

And Collette was glad of it.

Meanwhile, Wednesday night, most of the kids from the mission trip and the leaders had gathered at church for the New Orleans mission trip, complete with four brief slide shows set to music and arranged by OLeif. The remaining junior high students took up many of the audience seats, and half of them snickered for no reason throughout the presentation. Ben-Hur, Sunrise, Molly, Susie, Addicus, Joe, and Liepaja took the stand and talked about the various aspects of their week to those there gathered.

Joe began his brief account with,

“I’ve been on four mission trips and this one was different because we got to destroy things.”

A loud guffaw was heard from the back of the room from Mr. Pepper.

Afterwards, Rose carried around her framed fly photo, unwilling, it seemed, to part with it immediately to Ivy’s wall.

Meanwhile, Thursday afternoon brought perfectly warm-cooled winds and gray skies. And after running errands for the evening, there was ravioli and the season premiere of The Office as the wind rolled through the branches outside the window.
