Costco Grub & The Rye Entourage

Saturday, February 11, 2012

Puck was ready to go by 6:30 Saturday morning.
Collette finished frying up the bacon…
“Everything you cook is delicious!” Puck said importantly.
R-i-i-i-i-i-i-p.
Puck had been perusing the Mid Rivers Newsmagazine.
“This picture is inappropriate for little kids,” he announced, bearing the torn ad to his Dad.
Several flabby bellies posed for weight-loss programs.
“Throw it away!” he declared piously.

Mom called. She and Linnea were preparing to leave for Cappuccino’s with ladies from church. However, Mom had been slated to watch the Rye boys around two o’clock, and Rose had succumbed to fever and aches, as Joe had apparently discovered…
“Are you sick?” he asked.
“No,” she retorted. “I just decided to stay in bed for the fun of it and change my voice.”
To be certain that she wouldn’t contaminate the boys, Mom would come over to the Silverspoon’s to watch them there instead. Puck was pleased.
Sebastian was looking a little blue. Puck walked over to him…
“Sebastian. I’m afraid you need a little pet.”
Sebastian nuzzled him while Puck giggled.
While Collette let a little sun on her face through the deck door windows, Puck advised her…
“Mama. It’s one thousand degrees out there.”

With the arrival of noon, and a windchill of 17, a promise to Puck was kept.
Costco.
The tike had completed another set in his reading series and so would be awarded the opportunity to select another book. The Costco food court came first. People were pretty enthralled with that place. Hadn’t she heard of someone who said…
“I think I’m going to marry the Costco food court.”
It wasn’t that wonderful. But with foot-long hot dogs and a fountain soda for $1.50, jumbo grease-rolled slices of pepperoni pizza for $2.00, and huge plastic cups of frozen yogurt for $1.35… well, it was a cheap way to get a fun lunch. On the way, Puck was prepping his stomach…
“I could eat a whole steak!”
OLeif was tremendous at the art of spoiling. While Puck engaged a seven minute thought-battle over which book to choose, OLeif had already found the apple for Collette. The entire World Series on DVD. OLeif had snatched it before Collette could think twice. A box of fat soft-baked chocolate chip cookies for Sunday morning following the service, and Puck’s six-in-one Berenstain Bears. Dollar churros. And back into the bite of winter wind.

The little Rye family arrived at three o’clock. Judah and Evangeline had plans for the evening. It wasn’t long before Puck and Hesed were following Snickers and giggling together like cookie thief conspirators, a couple of swell pals congratulating each other on various conquests and successes of life…
“Oh. Nice sippy cup,” Puck grinned.
In the middle of the afternoon Mom scooted off for her own quick run to Costco to gather her share of the edible supplies for Sunday morning. Big blue-eyed baby was left in Collette’s charge. She surprised herself by successfully burping him three times throughout the course of his bottle. She might have forgotten everything else about raising a baby, but at least that one still worked. OLeif entertained a mesmerized Hesed with his mandolin. As he prepared to go down for the night, Puck was followed by Hesed to his temporary bedroom.
“Let me show you into the spookiness!” Puck declared.
And later, right before bed, he said to Hesed decidedly…
“Just call me Uncle Puck.”
When OLeif tucked him in, Puck said…
“Daddy. Go pet Solomon on the head.”
When Judah and Evangeline returned around eight, they talked about their wonderful time at the Italian restaurant and a demo in an eight thousand dollar massage chair…
“My life has been transformed,” Judah declared.
“Man, if it was me, I’d be figuring out how I could go there for a free demo and get a different employee every day,” said OLeif.
“Yeah, I was thinking of working up some disguises,” Reverend Rye agreed.
As they departed, profusely thanking for the help, Judah said…
“We are so grateful, we’ve been considering renaming the boys. Adelaide Snicketts Rye, and Adelaide Snicketts Rye II.

And somewhere around town, Magnus had turned 23.
