OLeif and Puck were getting ready for the morning.
“What is that sound?” Puck asked. “Is that chickens marching on the ceiling?”
“Sure, it’s chickens marching on the ceiling,” Collette replied, busy getting everyone out the door.
But Puck was already distracted.
“You know, I probably shouldn’t wear this brown shirt with brown pants,” OLeif mumbled to himself. “I’ll look like a muddy stick.”
“Do it, Dad!”

Naira Eight was going to start spending Wednesday mornings with Puck and the family. This meant a quiet park to – because there were no water fowl available – feed the fish – shiny little monsters tearing up an eighth loaf of bread. Collette wondered when they had developed a taste for wheat…

When they returned, Carrie and Francis had devised a new method to warn rabbits of Snuggles’ impending pounce. This involved a trip to Walgreen’s and two “singing birthday cards”…
“The cashier looked funny at me because it was a happy birthday husband card and it had a weird picture inside, so I had to explain the whole thing,” Francis grinned.
So Carrie cut out the speaker disc inside the card and attached it to Snuggles’ harness. The slightest jiggle, and Snuggles was a walking boom box.
They didn’t see Snuggles again until much later in the afternoon…

Fernando and Polly were coming in from Boston for an open house baby shower on Sunday, so gifts were needed. Puck was left behind wearing a blanket over his head with Linnea playing “The Charleston” on her ukulele.
Target was also included in the picture – a quiet place – except for the two girls cartwheeling past Women’s Sports Apparel.
A pair of khaki shorts for Collette – first pair of shorts purchased since maybe early high school.
An emerald high-low skirt for Linnea.
Two package of tortillas and four cans of refried beans.

Back on the ranch…
At Carrie’s suggestion, bars of ivory soap in the microwave produced giant billowing cumulonimbus clouds.
Burritos for dinner.
Mom took Linnea to youth group before her church meeting.
While Collette and Puck waited for their ride, they walked the street under the popcorn tree for awhile until Puck nested himself beside the mailbox in a pile of gravel with an empty ice cream bucket of matchbox cars, dialoging stories to himself…
“Japan! Here we come!”

OLeif’s pick-up at 6:30 produced a one point five hour final and a B+ on his previous sermon.
A tire blow-out on the tractor trailer two cars ahead on the ride home.

Collette was up late catching the 9:10 game; OLeif joined her with a rice pudding, reading lyrics to Josh Ritter songs, including one of his favorites – “Another New World” – and then something about “high-fiving the universe”.
Collette hit hay after midnight.
