Curses on the Pink Polka Dots
Monday, July 31, 2006
Sunday was spent with the Silverspoon family and Diana at Christ Presbyterian, Collette arriving shortly before the sermon (hurrying back from Grace after teaching Sunday School). And lunch was casual around a hearty meal of pork chops, mashed potatoes, and key lime pie as they sprawled in the Silverspoon living room watching The World’s Fastest Indian. It was almost a sleepy day.
Meanwhile, since Collette had last seen Diana, only four days before, Diana had purchased a car and had driven up to Chicago for an interview at the Naperville paper. Collette presumed that she spent the rest of her Sunday afternoon on an intense apartment-hunt via the Internet.
Sunday night was ridiculous with Jimmy, Evangeline, Judah, OLeif, Collette, Joe, Rose, Ben-Hur, Augustus, Susie, and Molly – kids falling out of chairs, on the floor, jumping up and down outside the windows, wearing sombreros – namely, Joe and Augustus. Sometimes small groups were the craziest.
Monday morning Collette woke from such a deep sleep and scattered dreams, that it took her a good long while to recall what day it actually was. She debated between Sunday and Monday for a longer time than should have been necessary, in her half-sleep, and eventually decided upon Monday, seeing as she had some vague recollections of Sunday already having taken place.
During the morning hours, Collette drew some stick-men satirical cartoons in her journal while Rose reviewed her literature for quizzing and they then discussed Medieval writers.
Later in the afternoon, the girls did a little clothes shopping with a pretzel apiece from Mom on the way out. In the middle of their shopping experience (a thing none of them relished too keenly), Carrie and Collette recommended a pink dress with little white polka dots to Rose. She almost had a cow on the spot.
“Polka dots!” She screeched. “No way am I wearing polka dots! Pink polka dots! That’s like what Mom used to make you wear when you were kids! Yuck!”
Collette and Carrie-Bri decided to let the polka dots rest where they might.
And Collette decided to rename her cannibal necklace, the pirate necklace.
