3. Yali captures a small toad at the Big House which he names either “Hopper” or “Apples” – uncertain; later, he releases him into the bark crevice of a dogwood tree, saying, “Goodbye. It was nice to meet you.”
4. At Theodore’s and Gloria’s, Puck is bequeathed a sharp hand scythe, Ukrainian leather whip, and an old zipline, while the kids snack on fresh carrots and mugs of hot cocoa (Gloria saves me a large Hershey’s bar)
