Day with OLeif
Denae’s and Diana’s simultaneous birthday resulted in an unexpected date day for OLeif and Collette. It began with gray skies and cold rain – always a good starter.
After dropping off Puck to be supervised by Carrie for the day, they headed toward downtown. OLeif’s worship class at seminary provided him the opportunity to play for chapel that morning, which included a solo: How Can I Keep From Singing. Before the service began, Collette took a walk downstairs, wondering if the bathroom at the end of the hall was where the hanging of the Irish woman had taken place those years ago. It was a chilling thought.
The Art Museum was next. Collette brought her little red notebook to sketch Medieval and English Colonial prints to paint on the living room wall at a later time. As they walked the quiet halls, Collette realized that a museum was one of the few places she would enjoy working at – that, or a bakery, maybe. And of course – the archaeology field. While there, they stopped in at the cafe – Puck’s – where Collette had a grilled cheese sandwich and a strawberry kiwi juice.
Collette loved St. Louis – the hidden homes and buildings built in a fancier era, in unique and beautiful stone architecture, the private schools and churches, the ancient overspreading trees and wealthy neighborhoods. And Forest Park, of course.
After dropping in at Art Mart to browse through the oils, pens, and canvases, they picked up a root beer and a Fiji water and headed over to Rosciglione’s for a package of tomato-basil sausages for supper, a cannoli apiece, and a small bag of assorted Italian cookies for the family.
Upon return, Puck was dressed in Francis’ old Tae Kwon Do uniform, banging together pots and pans in the kitchen.
“Well, he had a little accident,” said Carrie. “Some of the food coloring got on his shirt. Here, Puck, show Mama what you made.”
Puck proudly handed Collette his hand-stamped paperweight, with his name written below it, covered it greens, yellows, blues, and reds. It was beautiful.
By the time Puck was reluctantly ready to go home for the evening, they picked up Kung Fu Panda for movie night, and returned home for dinner and cookies.
Good day.
