Eve's Day
It was Eve’s wedding day, to be held at one o’clock in the afternoon.
Everything began with a beautiful cool spring rain.
And then it suddenly stopped at about a quarter past seven in the morning, bringing with it casted green shadows and fairy-tale-like pictures out the window.
Carrie and all of the other bridesmaids had been instructed to arrive at the church by eight in the morning for their hair to be done. However, Carrie, who still had her thread-wrapped dreadlocks, had decided to fix her hair herself.
After putting Puck down for his nap under the supervision of his Papa, OLeif and Collette left for the wedding, followed shortly by Gloria and the boys.
By two o’clock, the ceremony had ended.
Everything was elegant.
Eve was very beautiful — sparkling white dress, her red hair pulled up with a veil tucked underneath. She wore twinkling diamond earrings and necklace and carried a bouquet of pink and white silk Gerberas.
The bridesmaids wore aqua and carried the same flowers that Diana had pieced together. Bing played several beautiful pieces on his cello. Annamaria was a bridesmaid. Tor — a groomsmen, escorting Carrie-Bri. Adam an usher. Eleda a junior bridesmaid. Lonnie distributed wedding programs at the door. Leia was one of the two flower girls. And Jules was the ring bearer. It was good to see family so involved, supporting their sister together and enjoying the experience.
Then followed the giving away of the bride, the vows, the rings, the lighting of the unity candle, the message, and communion for the new couple.
Toward the end of the ceremony there was a picture slideshow. It was like a time machine watching Eve’s collection of photographs. Not one of those photos had Collette not seen. It was amazing that this little girl who once walked around sniffing her little blanket and ribbon ‘parts’ was now a grown woman in a wedding gown standing next to her groom in front of a church of witnesses.
And Diana had brought her boyfriend from D.C., who seemed a little overwhelmed with the mass of people he was to meet for the first time. And though they were only able to shake hands before the ceremony began, it seemed to Collette that he was a friendly, quiet sort of guy.
Then to the reception hall. So many old faces there… including Mrs. Blots, all the way from Louisiana, who was to cut the cakes with Mom. And Aunt Jo from California.
Around four o’clock, the bridal party arrived, ready to dive into turkey, ham, and roast beef dollar roll sandwiches, chicken salad croissants, vegetable platters, strawberries and pineapple, and then the cake table… Bride’s cake and groom’s (which was chocolate and adorned with palm trees). There were also little cheesecake squares and cocoa-dusted truffles.
After the toasts: the garter toss, bouquet toss, the cutting of the cake — which resulted in Eve’s face plastered in white frosting… and then the dances. Bride and groom. Father-daughter. Mother-son. Brother-sister. Etc., etc., etc.
And by this time, it was time for the little Silverspoon family to leave for the evening. But the party was sure to continue, and then even later into the night at the English house.
So the bride and groom were ready to leave for a week in Hawaii to start off their lives together. And Eve English was now Eve Avonlea.
It was a good day.
