Eve's News

Sunday, May 6, 2007

In random news of the morning, OLeif and Collette had received an invitation to a wedding taking place in Odessa, Texas, June 1st. Oddly, though, the invitation had been mailed in a black envelope. Collette had never before received a wedding invitation in a black envelope. For that matter, she had never received a wedding invitation in anything but a white envelope, once she thought about it.

But the big news of the day came shortly after church that morning. OLeif, Collette, and Puck headed back to the house for an unconventional lunch of Krispy Kreme donuts straight out of the box with the family, at Carrie’s request.

Inside, Carrie was already hard at work cranking out the papers.

“Collette, come here,” she called from the computer. “What do you see on the screen?”

Collette looked at what was Carrie’s facebook account, including lists of announcements from other face-bookers. She scanned through the various headlines until finally, she saw it at the bottom of the page – bookended with a red heart – the announcement read:

Eve English and Othniel Avonlea are now in a relationship.”

“You’re kidding!” Collette couldn’t believe it.

“I know,” Carrie was smiling. “She just found out about it yesterday. She called me this morning; she’s ecstatic. And Mrs. English is just elated of course. And so is Diana.”

It was the beginning of another era. Times kept changing every time someone graduated or moved or married or had a kid. And this time it was extra special because Eve was so much like their sister, having known her since she was born. And it was also special for Collette because she remembered what it was like – five years earlier when she had found out from OLeif about his feelings for herself. Waking up the next morning, the world had seemed much like a different place, as though a spring rain had come through during the night and everything was new and fresh in a mysterious sort of way.

“They’re saying they’ll probably have to wait two to three years…” Mom was saying, after she got off the phone with Mrs. English. “Because Othniel already has about a year and a half of school done.”

Othniel was graduating with Joe and Wallace in three weeks with the rest of the home schooled students. And Eve already had nearly one year out of three completed at nursing school. But it seemed to be a more common thing those days for the girls to end up with guys who were about a year younger than themselves.

They were all very happy for Eve and for the new time in her life. The next several years promised to be good times for her.
