Father's Day Part III
Sunday, June 28, 2009
It was time to finally, officially, celebrate Father’s Day.
After church, while Collette, Joe, and Puck waited for everyone else to return from their respected services and classes, Puck dumped a box of Cheerios onto the living room floor for Trooper to eat.
After lunch, everyone sat around in the living room and discussed various things, including whether or not bottle rockets were illegal in Missouri.
“Man,” said Francis, “I’m gonna load up on fireworks before they outlaw anything that goes ‘boom’.”
Then they all discussed the various kinds of romantic proposals, as none of them could think of anyone who had been given a romantic proposal.
“I’d have it at the Crown Candy Kitchen,” said Rose.
“Yeah, they’d send out the ring in one of those heart-stopping bacon sandwiches,” said Collette.
“Crunch! Ow!” said Carrie.
“And then you’d say, ‘Go get me some chocolate!’” Joe barked in Rose-imitation.
“We’d go there after he proposed,” said Rose, changing her mind.
“Or maybe a proposal under the dinosaurs at the Science Center,” Carrie suggested. “Those things used to rock the building, they were so loud.”
“’Yeah,” Joe laughed. “’Will you marry… ROAR!’”
“Kids run off screaming,” Carrie laughed.
Later, Mom and Grandma Combs returned from the 50th wedding anniversary celebration they had attended for the afternoon, just in time for Dad’s barbecue, homemade macaroni and cheese, and fruit salad.
For Dad’s gifts:
Rescue from Gilligan’s Island (on DVD) from OLeif, Collette, and Puck
biography of Paul Harvey (from the family)
a photo book of Mom’s and Dad’s trip to Europe (made by Collette)
Then, Carrie gave Puck her old cowboy hat to wear, and he stomped around the house in it very proudly.
This was followed with frozen custard at Silky’s.
Once there, OLeif ordered two little domed cups of pretzel pieces and walnuts. Puck loved these.
He loved even more the several licks he got off Carrie’s chocolate custard cone, while hurrying back and forth between tables to visit with everyone.
“Puck, come look at the moon,” Dad said, calling him over.
He lifted Puck up toward the sky.
“Moon, Grappa, moon!” Puck exclaimed in great excitement.
“I’m going to the moon,” said Dad. “You want to come with me?”
“Want to come with you.”
“Ok. We’ll go.”
Puck immediately became enthusiastic about the appearance of his little round buddy in the sky.
“Moon, Mama! Joe, Moon! Lila, moon! Moon, Carrie! Daddy, moon! Gamma Combs, moon! Gamma, moon! Rose, Rose, moon! Francis, moon!”
Then he saw a little girl about his height walk past with a cup of custard.
He watched her for a few seconds.
Then the finger pointed back to the sky.
“Baby, moon!”
Shortly later came the goodbyes to everyone. Puck handed out the hugs, the high fives, ‘goodbyes’ to all, including the moon and cars on the road. Etc., etc., and etc.
