French Toast and Lincoln Logs

It already smelled like fall. But there were still three weeks left, and they seemed cool.

OLeif mended mostly over Thursday night, and found himself practically prepared to join the senior high boys on a retreat to the lake over Friday evening through Sunday night. Also joining the crowd were: Jimmy, the Buckle family, Joe, Ben-Hur, Wallace, and Curly. Apparently there would be boating, paint-balling, and giant swings involved over the weekend.

Meanwhile, as Collette had no car, she packed her own bag to spend the weekend back at the house.

During the course of the day, OLeif sent Collette a quote from one of the dudes at work who had requested help with his computer at work:

“Eddie was throwing his snappers at everyone again, and some of the rocks got stuck in my keyboard, now my backspace button won’t work, can you fix it?”

That evening, Carrie was at work and Rose met up with Molly at Paul’s Donuts. So Dad, Mom, Collette, Frances, and Linnea headed over to Cracker Barrel for dinner, French toast and bacon to be specific, for Collette, which just about made the evening perfect.

On the way back, Mom tried to convince Dad to take them over to the elementary school playground, and he finally reluctantly consented. Frances and Linnea flew into the house to don full fatigues.

Frances reemerged complete with gun and beret, looking as if he had just marched out of Junior West Point. Except for his ever-missing front tooth, he looked rather professional. Linnea followed with army pants and a sweatshirt pulled over her head. She slipped on a pair of overgrown sunglasses.

“Collette, would you know it was me?” She asked discretely, lurking in the shadows of the living room.

Collette had to admit that she could still tell it was Linnea, despite the large shades.

After returning to the mini-van, Linnea pulled out her chosen army weapon of the evening. Collette squinted in the dark to get a better look.

“Is that a… Lincoln log?”

“Yup!” Linnea grinned. “Watch it, or I’ll knock someone out with it!”

As it turned out, Dad decided to not drive to the school yard, seeing as it was too dark. And so they drove around to all the McDonald’s in the area looking for a cartoon for Frances and Linnea in the Redbox. After passing McDonald’s number five, victory! And Rose was picked up from the coffee shop behind Paul’s Donuts.
