Friends and Bikes

“Surprise chicken! BWAK! BWAK! BWAK! BWAK! BWAK!”

That’s how Puck greeted me Tuesday morning, on the hunt to borrow my laptop. Although I’m pretty sure he thought I was already awake, despite our two year-old still nuzzled up against my neck pretending to be in deep sleep. Oxbear shushed him and Puck ratcheted down the volume a few levels.

Breakfast. Yali mused over his bowl of Cheerios, pre-milk, studying. After awhile he picked out a fateful half-Cheerio which he held like a trophy to me.

“Moon!” he said, although something that sounded way more like “muh”.

I got it though. “Yes, Yali. That looks like a crescent moon. Good job!”

“Hi moon!” he said. “Mom! Mom! Hi moon! Hi moon!”

He waved a little brown paw at his treasure before eating it.

Puck spent most of the day on a Sunday School field trip to the City Museum. In a church as small as ours, this meant only two official students. However, one of Puck’s older church pals also tagged along to increase the fun, and also to keep an eye on Puck, who was “very fast” as his teacher diplomatically put it. Puck has a hard time staying where he’s supposed to stay when imagination and adventure call.

He returned shortly after two o’clock with the remains of a hearty “adult meal” sandwich, as he described it to me, full of fun times and energy put to good use.

At four o’clock, however, he was ready for another bike ride.

“Can I wear my tuxedo on our walk, Mom?”

I checked out the suit he was putting on, prepping for the adoption court date Thursday afternoon. Tux it wasn’t, but I tried to explain that even wearing a suit on a hot afternoon biking around a dusty neighborhood, just couldn’t happen.

Later at dinner, Yali’s plate was removed until he ceased intentionally wiping egg yolk through his hair. I left the room momentarily. Meanwhile, Yali, hoping for his meal to be returned, worked his drama puppy dog eyes magic on his older brother. After a few moments…

“MOM!” Puck bellowed from the kitchen, “COME HERE, QUICK! HE’S TEMPTING ME!!!!”
