Further Celebrations

In which further multiple celebrations are celebrated…
Three something in the morning…
Thunder.
Wind.
Silence.
Thunder.
Puck had ideas about what to do after church that day.
“We can play Minecraft! And watch Redwall! And eat candy!”
And OLeif wanted to show Puck how to make terrariums with little glass apple juice bottles and tweezers.
At church.
Judah in the pulpit.
Jonah in Sunday School.
Granny’s donuts for lunch.
Linnea was wearing feathers in her hair.
Joe returned from the second service…
“Happy Father’s Day!” OLeif greeted him.
“How did you know?” Joe asked. “I just adopted five hundred Arabian children yesterday.”
Then he went on to talk about how silly it was that guys had to wear pants to church.
Into the afternoon…
Carrie had given Earnest a bell to wear around his neck.
Dad, OLeif, Joe, and Francis took the motorcycle up to the school to drive for awhile.
There was an enormous built-up bonfire in the backyard.
And the whiteboard read:
bunny brush
bacon
eggs
biscuits
Meanwhile, in a gesture of sisterly love…
“Sit still, Rose. This is the last time that I’ll get to squish you…”
“Why?”
“…the week that you’re still twenty…”
“Ugh. Go squish Linnea instead.”
“I did already. And what song did I sing to you, Linnea?”
“Steamroller,” Linnea said, wrinkling her nose.
“You made a Rose-face,” Collette said.
“Rose already taught her how to make the frog face,” Carrie explained.
Then Rose taught Puck new things about spiders.
“They do a spider dance. They go bounce, bounce, bounce, and then I squish them. ‘Cause they shouldn’t do that.”
Grandma arrived shortly later for the quadruple celebration…
OLeif’s 27th.
Grandma’s 75th.
Father’s Day.
Rose’s 21st.
Mom and Carrie put together the pans of roasted potatoes and sweet potatoes. Dad started the grill.
And Earnest ate through his bell collar.
Gifts.
OLeif: two bottles of English barley wine from the family and helpful keychain gadgets, and bacon chocolate cocoa, bacon popcorn, and ‘lunch cash’ from Grandma Snicketts. Also from Grandma, a new translation of the Bible written, and in complete seriousness, in the official Hawai’i Pidgin. Hilarious.
Grandma: two photo books of New York and the Bahamas, created by Carrie-Bri and Collette, respectively.
Dad: Chrome cologne (that came with a silver watch) from the family, a package of cashews and another of pistachios from OLeif, Collette, and Puck.
And for Rose from Grandma: the first four seasons of Doc Martin (another BBC series), and an orange Doc Martin quote mug.
Then the boys went out for some volleyball with Linnea.
Dinner.
Pork chops. Garlic pull-apart bread.
A birthday chocolate chip cookie iced in bright blue and a Father’s Day cake emblazoned with about seven of Dad’s more ridiculous photographs, mostly taken by Rose, including one of a cabbage leaf on Dad’s head. Red frosting. Blue sparkles. And in text…
“The many faces of Snicketts!”
The usual rousing choruses of Happy Birthday and Happy, Happy Father’s Day, with the usual…
“Two thousand eleven. Happy Father’s Da-ay!”
The evening ended with Joe and Magnus coming over to catch up on stuff with OLeif.
And in other news…
Poor Grandma Snicketts’ back was still in a good deal of pain.
And Aunt Day and Uncle Bobs were moving back to St. Louis from Sydney.
“Da One dat tell all dis stuff say, ‘Yeah, I coming back real soon!’
“Yeah, Boss! Come back real soon, Jesus!
“I like all you guys know da good way our Boss Jesus make to you! Dass it!”
