Games & Parties

2 Octobro, 2010

They were perfect October skies: mottled in violet and dark blue and silvers. A perfect sculpture to the beginning of Collette’s favorite season. The temperatures were equally right. 65 degrees for a high. And a little rain to set it all off.

It was AC STL match day!

But first…
Once things got started in the sleepy cracker box of a little house, it was time for the first event of the day. Puck’s second cousins, Sunlight and Starlight, had just turned two, and were celebrating their birthday in party-style at their home in Florissant.
So come 10:30, OLeif, Collette, and Puck met Dad and Mom at the credit union to follow them out north.

Everything was just as a perfect kids’ birthday party should be. Nerissa kept a nice house. Everything was cleaned and organized, the walls were trim and hung with professional photos of the girls. Balloons and streamers and even two giant pink metallic balloons in the shapes of “2”. A bubble machine was whirling on the back patio as hordes of girls in pink climbed up the tree house with Puck, while Nerissa apologized for the weather. It was cold, but there was no rain, and the kids hardly noticed.
Sunlight and Starlight, arrayed in dark pink themselves, with their little ears sporting crystal studs, managed to stay awake long enough for lunch to be served.
“They’re falling asleep?” said Nerissa. “Well, give ‘em Coca-Cola or something.”
Lunch was: a giant pan of chicken fingers, another of very good macaroni and cheese, a giant salad, another large fruit salad, and a wall of sodas and ice.
“I like all this little kid food,” said Bristol. “I don’t like any of that green stuff.”
And Puck, because he could not get quite enough fruit salad to suit his appetite, said, “I wish I had a whole plate of blueberries. That would be awesome!”
Next, because the party was themed after monkeys, and there were bunches of bananas everywhere, the monkey cake was served.
“This is even from a real bakery,” Bristol said.
“It should be pretty good then,” said Collette.
“That depends on your point of view,” he replied with a laugh. “Nerissa might think it’s good. But I’m broke!”
Shortly after the cake, the pinata was pulled to pieces. Puck, who had originally showed no interest in the monkey pinata wearing a pink bow, when he saw the explosion of candy, he stormed over in disbelief and picked up a Snickers bar.
“Mama!” he cried. “Look what I found!”
He had to be urged two or three times by Nerissa to go back for more.
Finally, when there had been enough cake and candy, it was time to go, back into the cold half-sunshine.

Second stop: the Silverpoon’s. Izzy was waiting for them with OLeif’s aunt and uncle from Texas, Clause and Agnes. Puck, not a bit shy, hurried over to them to tell them stories about himself and other things. Clause and Agnes were both quite surprised to see him not hiding from them, as he had not yet met them.
“Well… he was at a birthday party earlier…” OLeif began to explain the unwarranted lack of shyness.
“Did you hear that, Agnes,” he said. “They goosed him up on candy before he got here!” Uncle Clause laughed.
Clause and Agnes were wonderful. Two of their favorite people.
“I hope I’m like Uncle Clause someday,” said OLeif.
It had already been five years since they had seen them. And so for the evening, OLeif stayed to enjoy steaks with their family, while Puck was to spend the night.

And Collette… met up with the entire family, plus Magnus, over at the house, to head out to the game. After some mis-times and mis-directions, both vehicles finally pulled into the soccer park on that cold and windy evening. Dad ordered concession fair for everyone, mostly Gus’ pretzel sticks, which were even better than Collette had remembered. And they took their seats a few minutes before the National Anthem.
It was a good game. The Rochester Rhinos seemed a bit dazed when ‘The Italian’ smashed in AC STL’s first goal in the third minute. After that, AC STL held them off pretty brilliantly. The Rhinos were embellishing so much, that someone from the rowdy stands housing over 3,300 fans, shouted, “Get him off the field! He’s too fragile!” And Rose yelled, “Go home to your mom and eat a Rice Krispy treat!”
About halfway through the second half, Rose could see that Magnus was still sitting in the bleachers across the field, slowly freezing into an ice cube. She called Joe on his phone and demanded that Magnus put on the hoodie he had been holding all night. When this still didn’t work, she threatened that she would make the whole drive next week to Nashville miserable for him. Then they all saw him put on the hoodie. Although it came right off again after the game…
In the end, the score was 2-1, in favor of the Rhinos, due to two poor calls by the refs. The score should have, in reality, been 2-1 in favor of AC STL. But it had still been a great game, and there were high hopes for the 2011 season.

And to finish off the night, they dropped by Krispy Kreme for two dozen, hot off the press.
