Grandma Takes a Spill

I hadn’t heard the group text at 6:04 from Carrie-Bri, but Grandma was in the hospital after taking a fall in the hall. Ultimately we would learn that she had fractured her hip. However, for a 79 year-old woman, Grandma did pretty well for herself.

“Well, he’s doing so amazingly well, I’d say you only need maybe three or four more visits,” Yali’s Physical Therapist told me just after eight o’clock that morning. “He’s doing great.”

I think Yali would have opted for an extended schedule of massages and brightly colored chunky books to read twice a week. But this was good news. We left to shop and pick up more piles of one of Yali’s current favorite food sources: fruit puree packs.

Yali continued to be the item of interest during carpool. One of these days it will fade and he’ll blend in with the masses a little bit more. It’s for his own good, too. This kid is borderline 100% spoiled. Considering that he was basically raised by a grandmother for the first two years of his life, my indigenous Colombian son could literally not have expected anything better prior to his adoption. So now, the tears come immediately when the food isn’t served fast enough, when the toy doesn’t cooperate perfectly, when his socks and shoes don’t align on his little brown feet without some moderate effort.

Mama’s going to win this battle.

As we drove up the street to the Big House, we could see Linnea-Irish and Thumper stretched out on the hood of Thumper’s car, chatting.

“What are those girls doing?” Puck asked, mesmerized.

“I guess they’re just hanging out.”

Puck paused to shake his head. “Why am I understanding my aunts less and less these days?”

“Well, hon, they’re girls. So … you may never fully understand them.”

But Puck wouldn’t settle for failure. “Mom. One day I’ll be a scientist. Then I’ll have a reasonable explanation for it.”

Meanwhile, Grandma was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday and was in good spirits.
