Grandpa's Home

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

It was time to visit Grandpa. He was doing well living in an assisted care facility in Ladue. So Mom, Collette, Carrie-Bri, Francis, Linnea, and Puck left in the minivan mid-morning to see what he thought of his new home.
“Well, hello!” he said as they entered his abode. “So nice to see you all.”
They all gave him hugs and sat around his spacious room.
“Look at those windows,” Mom said cheerfully. “What a nice view you have.”
Grandpa agreed. They talked about the facility, about the wedding in September, about foods Grandpa wished he could have…
“Oh, I’d love chocolate he said,” laughing.
They talked about Francis’ recent trip to Philmont.
“So did you climb up higher than your dad?” Grandpa asked.
“Well, Dad and I climbed the same. We climbed to the top of Mount Baldy” said Francis. “And actually, Dad is a little taller that I am, so I guess he did get a little higher.”
“So you are enjoying it here?” Mom asked him later.
“It’s a nice place,” said Grandpa. “I’m not doing somersaults or anything here, but I get around and talk to people. You make yourself known if you want to. And I think everyone knows who I am here.”
Puck, who was enjoying exploring the room, walked behind Grandpa’s chair and patted him on the back. Then he went back to graze at Carrie’s chair, where she held the bag of Honey Nut Cheerios.
After they stayed for about an hour, Grandpa walked them down to the glass bird sanctuary at the end of the hall, where nested and flew tiny birds from the Canary Islands, Africa, and Australia. Puck especially liked to watch his little winged friends.
Back at the house after his nap, Puck continued his fascination with closing open doors. He received applause for this feet and smiled chubby smiles through his fat dimples. This was followed with a frolic in the little pool on the patio with his Aunt Linnea while Mom watched.
