Greek

Thursday night Collette had dreams of wild winds in tall old trees in even older neighborhoods of long straight streets and houses of brown stone, rain, and other things.

To the Greek lunch.

Mom, OLeif (who had the day off of work), Collette, Rose, Linnea, and Puck left late that morning to head toward the city. They met Grandma at a table before the crowds began to form.

The Greek Orthodox church where the meal was served by the Greeks themselves had been hosting their special lunches for years. Collette immediately gravitated toward the gyros (yih-rohs), as did Rose and Linnea. OLeif opted for a special shrimp dish, and Mom and Grandma took the Greek salads. There was also the traditional baklava and Greek bread. And as was expected, all was delicious. The line was never-ending. Greek music was played over the sound system above the thirty or so tables arranged in the gymnasium.

After the meals were cleared and OLeif had commented three times on how stuffed he actually was, Grandma handed over Rose’s set of gifts, including a figurine of an iguana on a log, two pairs of flip-flops with stuffed amphibian-like creatures attached, a fat pig piggy bank, and a camera bag.

Meanwhile, Rose had begun to research her grand Around-the-World-in-365-Days trip. She was beginning with Germany and Ireland.

In the afternoon, OLeif, Collette, and Puck dropped by the Silverspoon’s to give Izzy his birthday present miniature remote-controlled helicopter. All three boys spend most of the next hour learning how to operate and accurately control the tiny piece of machinery with shining light. Puck was also passed around again for some smiles.

After a stop by the bookstore for several journals and a book on the Greek islands, Puck hit the hay, and OLeif headed over to Augustus’ for sushi (made my Mrs. Honey), Chinese, and computer games.

Come evening, Collette looked over international adoptions from Uzbekistan.

And in the “ta-da” news of the week, at 3:30pm Rose Snicketts finally achieved the rank of Licensed Driver. And Curly had his braces removed. He decided that because of the new lisp given by the wearing of his retainers, he would play the part of Sean Connery.
