Happy Birthday, Whisper

In which Whisper Snicketts celebrates her first birthday…
5:58.
Puck was up.
He was also up for a snuggle and conversation.
“I looked like a turnip,” he said, “wrapped up in those blankets.”
And, when the birds came out…
“Hear those tweets, Daddy? That means it’s time to wake up.”
Breakfast: bacon and eggs, smoky kitchen, and peppermint for Puck, who had found the old forgotten stash.
Out and about…
Library.
Walgreen’s.
Then Puck got busy at the Silverspoon’s, tearing around on the patio in his tricycle, chucks, and a magnifying glass.
“I’m going to discover things!” he announced.
If ever a child was Calvin…
He next unearthed a black button that Izzy had lost off his coat. Followed by a small flower pot which OLeif helped him fill with a patch of green grass from the lawn.
“Now you can get a scissors and mow your own lawn,” OLeif told him.
Lunch over a National Geographic special of the giant crystal cave in Mexico.
And Theodore and OLeif supervised the grill on the deck.
At one o’clock, Collette and Puck were picked up by Mom and Linnea-Irish to attend Puck’s second cousin’s, Whisper’s, 1st birthday party in New Town at Uncle Balthasar’s and Aunt Tuuli’s.
Once again, a bash of balloons, streamers, princesses, pink and purple birthday cake, and enormous piles of gilded presents. And Whisper managed the noise and crowds rather valiantly in her little purple dress with white flowers and tiny pearl earrings in her ears.
There was a turtle pillow pet from Puck, and a bento book and Panda bento box from the rest of the family.
Sunlight and Starlight, at two and a half, were dressed the same as always in their matching pink shirts, jean skirts, striped stockings, and cowgirl boots, with little diamond studs in their ears. Aunt Tuuli had recently suffered a stress fracture in her foot. Uncle Balthasar was being ornery in his ‘Snicketts Boy’ way. And there was the story of how Starlight had knocked out her two front teeth and had caps on them now.
“I call her ‘Spongebob Teeth’,” Nerissa laughed.
Back to the Silverspoon’s in the beautiful, cool winds and sun shadows spearing the rising gray. While Gloria worked in the landscaping, Puck played in the lawn clippings waste bin, pretending it was a rocket ship.
“Kah-pshhhhhh!” he announced, taking off.
A huge tax refund.
And come evening, Theodore took OLeif and Izzy to the movies: Rango. And Gloria read the funnies with Puck before sending them with home grilled chicken and organic cheese.
In other news… Catalina appeared to be visiting Switzerland.
