Hodgepodge

In which adrenals and thyroid are checked around the hodgepodge of the day…

Puck was greeted at breakfast with a collection of Reading Rainbow VHS tapes from the library. He examined the unusual shape of the tape.
“We don’t have a ‘long DVD player’?” he asked. “Can I watch the Reading Rainbows?”

Over at the house that morning…
  1. Mom prepared buttered toast, as Bunny Bread, for the always-ravenous Puck before she and Dad took him to visit Grandpa Snicketts.
  2. Francis left shortly later for disc golf with buddies after checking out the severe weather alerts on KSDK, and returned shortly later after the outing had been inadvertently canceled too late.
  3. Chocolate-iced donuts under glass from one of Joe’s end of class parties…
  4. Contract signed and sealed for Classical Conversations in August.
  5. Earnest was on his usual rampage around the house.
  6. Joe left to get some printing done.
  7. Dad, Collette, and Carrie discussed business, Virgin Galactic, and the Boeing craft commercial flights to the moon by 2015.
  8. Carrie made salads for Mom and Dad for lunch after Dad asked about the donuts… while there were burgers with flavor of peppers and cheddar on homemade buns, by Carrie.
  9. Minecraft for the kids…

In the afternoon…
Dad and Puck were busy watching Reading Rainbow: Digging up Dinosaur Bones (which, incidentally, would cost $43.95 to replace if lost, stolen, or destroyed) and eating popcorn in Mom’s and Dad’s room.
Francis was still touting severe thunderstorms after a ride on the Ruckus.
“Massive updrafts.”
He returned to discuss the storm with Joe.
Rumble.
Thunder.
Mom had brought in the needlepoint after about fifteen years or so.
Linnea had pulled out the grapes earlier.
“That is inappropriate,” Puck said, scolding, as he pointed out all the holes in the bag.
Collette printed off another copy of the genealogy for Great Uncle Harry in New Mexico.
“Spider,” Carrie said, looking at the wall. “Francis!!”
Francis was still the gopher of the house. He picked up some photos for the grandmas from Walgreen’s and returned not long later to turn on a World War II film over a large box of Oreo Cakesters.
And Linnea-Irish and Puck dug in the dirt under the old tree.

By three o’clock, Mom, Collette, and Carrie were off to another visit with Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. Collette had crossed fingers regarding the hopeful addition of pasteurized milk products to her diet. And improvements had been made, in general.
Even Mom was tested and found to be lacking in the adrenal department as well, although in a manner not related to the condition in which Collette and Carrie had been found. And almost everyone had adrenal troubles at one time or another…
The evening progressed with Chick-fil-A, Target, and a little Morocco.
Puck spent the night, already bundled up on the carpet in Rose’s and Linnea’s room, after having eaten an entire 6-inch sub from Subway…
Rose returned from work, Bath & Bodyworks, Urban Outfitters for a striped shirt born somewhere between the 60’s and 70’s, and a Doctor Who party with friends from church.
Carrie lit candles in her room for Earnest, who was lounging on the carpet watching them dance, until he came out to socialize.
“Earnest is chasing Snuggles,” Rose informed them.
Linnea returned from youth group for a DQ grilled cheese, a favorite of hers.
Collette printed up a three-page genealogy of Grandma Combs’ father’s side of the family.
Carrie and Rose argued over the structures of Doctor Who history.
Dad and Francis caught up with the latest Harry Potter.
And Joe had just arrived in Nashville to help Curly move to another apartment.

If you look inside your bags, you will find a few things — a bouquet of hand crocheted flower pens, a mosaic portrait of each of you made from the crushed bottles of your favorite diet soda, and a personalized 5,000 word essay of why you’re all so awesome.”
