Home Stretch

Before church, Yali decided to try a new set of ear plugs. This time, instead of candy wrappers, it was scrambled eggs. Fortunately, I managed to stop him before he pushed them in too deep.

Turns out, Oxbear and Yali missed the service that morning. Yali decided that a sleepy temper tantrum was more interesting, so they took a drive down Greens Bottom Road until he fell asleep, and all was well with the world again.

Sometimes when a tense game of baseball is on – especially against the Cubs – I lose track of the day. So somehow we found ourselves, the whole crew minus Joe and Jaya, driving Goldilocks down to the highway to visit Grandma in her recovery center, the game crackling on AM radio as we arrived in Florissant sometime after four o’clock.

Grandma was in good spirits. It helped to get a Cards win on the television while we were there, I’m sure. She got a hair trim from Carrie. Her “get well” flowers and terrarium were watered. And with Grandma’s gumption, I think we all believed that she would be out of there in a couple of weeks.

Back on the road half an hour later, Yali whined for a sack of hoagie rolls sitting on the dashboard and followed up 2/3 of a roll with a smoked cheddar cheese stick. When the food disappears, the tears arrive. He’s learning how to pack it, just like his big brother.

My evening ended up being Podcast Episode 73, recorded in Dad’s office as usual. That was followed by a late grocery shop at Schnuck’s on the way back, including a few snacks for the evening with Oxbear which we got started on after the boys were soundly asleep, including an episode of Seinfeld.

When I got back, Crackers was trying to pick cilantro out of the garbage, her head deep in a bag of discards ready for the dumpster. Always hungry. Still spoiled since Francis babysat her this summer.

I don’t know. About this time of the season, my brain is one big baseball, and it’s hard to remember what happens every day.

That’s all I’ve got.

CARDINALS:

Chicago: 4-3 win after game-saving Heyward throw to home.

4 games up on Pittsburgh: 93 and 56; 13 games remaining.

Magic Number: 10.
