Yali marched into the kitchen that morning before school, dressed in the gray sweat pants and blue super heroes t-shirt I’d set out for him.

He looked at me seriously. “Mom. How do I look?”

“Cool, buddy. You look good.”

He walked away, satisfied, asking, “Where are my high tops?”
