Impressions
Puck walked out of the gym that afternoon as usual, same goofy spirit, same enthusiasm for the day’s next event. I helped him shove the remains of the day into his backpack in the quieter hallway we generally prefer to use for our daily exit.
Suddenly, out of nowhere…
“BLAGHBKPLTT!!!!”
My formerly coherent and relatively calm son felt the spontaneous need to yell gibberish while throwing himself backwards onto the carpeted floor, backpack on his back, flat on his back.
“Puck? What are you… doing…”
That’s when I knew Violet must be standing behind us. Indeed she was. This overwhelming display of intelligence and competence had already caught her attention. She watched shyly from the classroom door as Puck continued with another round of crazy cartoon eyes and verbal nonsense.
When I finally gathered my twitter-pated son back to his wits and we returned to the parking lot, Puck felt the urgent need to visit the bathroom.
“I can’t wait, Mom!”
He was already flying back indoors. As he sped like a crazy man back down the hallway, Lilly stared – clearly hugely impressed – with this young man’s desperate attempt to impress.
Somewhere on the Lindenwood University campus around seven o’clock, I met up with Oxbear, Linnea-Irish, and her buddy for Izzy’s film capstone project before graduation, including Charlie’s and German’s presentations. After Theodore, Gloria, Kitts, Carrie-Bri, Rose, and Francis also joined the party, we settled in for a three-hour haul of nine student short films. Francis even made a guest background appearance in Charlie’s film. I could spot him by his turquoise shoes.
At the end, when the awards had been distributed, Linnea-Irish and her pal had a few thoughts to share about the winning selection.
“How in the world did she win?”
“That was the worst film out of all of them!”
“Izzy’s was so much better than hers!”
“Oh, that was horrible!”
But the plastic trophies had already been distributed following the audience vote. The friends of the film student who was moving to L.A. with no plan, had spoken.
I think I fell asleep sometime after eleven. May has been a busy month.
