Irritants
Thursday was a day of irritations, and not for Collette alone. True, she had singed her arm on the clothes iron at the house, when reaching up to the cabinet for a plate for her hard-boiled egg, and hadn’t realized the iron was on.
Puck wouldn’t take his nap that day, for the first time in history.
And, the stock market had hit a free-fall by late afternoon.
“What is wrong with these people?” she found herself asking the air more than a few times. “Don’t you know this is affecting my mutual funds?”
Francis tried to distract her during algebra by looking for a picture of a smiling dollar bill on the Internet.
And it was Francis who had grated his finger while shredding cheddar for the burritos for lunch.
By mid-morning, Collette had a sear-mark, a scar from the iron, next to her elbow.
It was one of those days.
Fortunately, OLeif and Joe (who had come over that evening to watch The Office (whose particular episode was another disappointment of the day), decided to buy chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches and Little Debbie’s cosmic fudge brownies for the rest of the evening, which included a documentary on Dubai.
So every day had its little redemptions after all.
