On the third day back home…
It was the day before Epiphany. And because Luke and Leia would arrive the following afternoon for their back-to-school schedule, Collette packed up any items too alluring: particularly the tower of ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ boxes and what remained of the manger scene.
Mom and the kids arrived at around 9:00, and Mom and Puck were almost immediately off to the grocery store, but not after Mom had presented Collette with a small vanilla scone from Starbuck’s, which was very good.
When Francis walked in the door with his shag trimmed off…
“Hair cut?” Collette asked, skeptically.
“Carrie said you’d be mad,” Francis grinned.
Collette had long been convinced that Francis looked much better without the locks snipped too short.
And when Mom and Puck returned, Mom told of how the previous day when she had asked Francis to hold up a plate against the wall so that she could envision its spacing in order to hang it there…
“Mom. That’s silly,” he said.
“Come on, Francis.”
“But I don’t see how holding a plate up against the wall…”
“Just do it, Francis.”
And so he did. With the plate completely horizontal to the wall. And he was serious about it.
“Boys…” Mom laughed.
When they had left, Collette put together Puck’s sandwich. He dug in.
“Puck, we didn’t pray yet.”
“Oh, sorry,” he replied, replacing the sandwich on the plate. “Dear Jesus, thank You for saving us and thank you for my food. I hope you didn’t put tomatoes in my sandwich, Mama.”
For the afternoon, Classic 99 online continued to play.
During Quiet Hour, Puck packed his suitcase with toys ‘for [his] baby brother’.
“I’m gonna have to teach my baby brother how to use all dese toys,” he said seriously.
Then they read a very long story about a bunny named Jeremy, wherein they learned how to make ‘English Rabbit’, which involved principally: cheddar cheese, dried mustard, cream, and Worcestershire sauce. On toast.
And in other news, Carrie had heard from Paige Popp that she was due with her first baby in May.
It was a baby boom for 2011:
February — Monday (girl)
May — Paige
June — Emerald (boy), Idlewild (girl)
July — Violet
August — Travis’ baby
