Joe's Change

Thursday, July 31, 2008

Over at the house, Joe was making a barter with Mom, who wanted the fancy little table in his room for the living room.
“Well, Mom,” said Joe, “I’ll trade you the table for two cigars.”
“Joe!”
“You wouldn’t smoke cigars,” said Rose.
“No, not to smoke. I want to set them out on display.”
Meanwhile, Puck was amusing himself with a Butterfinger matchbox car and an old cellphone.
In the afternoon, Mom and Joe took a drive over to Florissant Valley Community College to look into their nationally renowned art program. After speaking with the head of the department, Joe decided to make plans to possibly transfer in the spring.
“He needs to go into Commercial Illustration,” Rose had said earlier.
Joe had a great imagination, which was usually easily transferable to paper with pencil.
That evening, Puck amused himself sorting Collette’s pots and pans. His favorite item in the kitchen cabinets, however, was the Irish cottage ceramic teapot, which Grandma Combs had given to Collette several years ago. He would have great fun taking the lid off and on. And that particular afternoon he took Collette’s keys and stuffed them inside before picking up the teapot with his chubby hands and bringing it over to the doormat to contemplate his treasure.
