July 31

The thunderstorm of the previous evening had never quite managed to hit their part of the metropolis.

The morning was quiet enough. A rare 4:57 wake-up call from Puck, after which he stuffed himself with bananas. A completed reading of an essay on Australia. And the Silverspoon’s, as usual, where Gloria took Puck with her to give Sebastian a bath at the dog wash.

At 1:30, all the guys but Puck attended a viewing of Salt at the theaters.

The mosquitoes were biting. So Gloria and Collette took Puck to the park instead. It was warm, but Puck was ready to go. Running pell-mell in his astronaut shirt, deep sea divers swimming shorts, and black flip-flips, he charged up and down the ramps to find some friends. Eventually, he found a boy half a head taller than him with his South East Asian mother, who was ‘looking for treasure’. They ran in circles around the jungle gyms together.

Come on! Come on!” Puck crowed. “Let’s find the treasure!”

They were shortly later joined by the boy’s little sister. And half an hour later, it was time to go. At the same time, the father of the little boy and girl called them over to leave for ice cream.

You’re a treasure,” the little girl told Puck.

I am not a treasure!” Puck declared. “I am a Puck!”

Goodbye, Puck!” called the boy.

Goodbye!”

Back for bubble bath, ‘meat sticks’ (sliced hamburger), cold milk, peaches, and strawberries for the rosy-cheeked little man. And of course, inevitably, Little Bear.

Just before leaving for the evening, they caught a clip of a documentary featuring the world’s most extreme airports, including the airstrip that Collette and Rose had walked to in St. Lucia until they realized they might be in a bad part of town. Music of intense danger blasted from the screen as the pilot made his descent.

Whoa, do you think this is supposed to be a dangerous landing?” Gloria asked with a laugh.

Naw,” replied OLeif. “This is the music they play in St. Lucia all the time.”

That night, Cheez-Itz, pomegranate juice, and yes, good old BallyK.
