Puck was chasing Linnea around in circles. She was sitting on the miniature skateboard holding a soda bottle and Puck plodded quickly behind her with his tongue sticking out.
“He wants the Coke,” Linnea explained.
Then Collette won the fastest game of War in history against Linnea, in a triple War.
Mom had gone out with Grandma and an old friend while Frances and his cronies ate brunch in the basement. Rose had an appointment with the doctor for an overly active sore throat. Frances had a visit scheduled to the orthodontist. Carrie was racking her brain for gift ideas for Eve’s birthday barbecue that evening. And OLeif was sleepy from not returning home until 12:38 in the morning after restoring the network connection at Stallone’s Formalwear.
Puck danced to a Finnish music video over lunch, chowing down on bananas.
Meanwhile, Frances was at his math. Sometimes his tone had the ring of the old Rose days.
“Frances,” Collette warned, “I’m going to call down the spiders on you if you don’t pay attention.”
“Yay! And then they’ll celebrate with me.”
Frances had the beginnings of a mustache.
“Yeah, I’m going to let it grow,” he said, “all the way around until it curls.”
The next day was OLeif’s birthday, and he was taking off work.
