Joe and Rose were back from their trip. Rose shared pictures of the Souths’ house, their cousins, and the various highlights of their trip which included creek swimming and luau. The collection of photographs also included a mosquito on Rose’s hand.
“I tasted so good, the mosquito popped its foot!” Rose exclaimed. “Texas makes me happy.”
So after a week of leisure, it was back to the real world. Rose had to apply for a waitress position and begin her ceramics class. Joe had to get a second job.
And life went on.
Frances had his fourth baseball game of the season that evening. Mom, Collette, Carrie-Bri, Rose, and Linnea watched from the bleachers. Collette fish-tail braided all the girls’ hair while they waited through the innings. Rose and Linnea made several trips to the concession stand for blue raspberry slushies and pretzels.
“Rose, you have salt all over your shirt,” said Collette.
Rose looked down and laughed.
“Those are decorations,” she said.
Then she pulled out her camera and began taking slews of pictures of Carrie and Collette for no good reason.
Finally, toward the end of the game, Frances was on third base. With a bat of the ball, it was his turn to come thundering across home plate. He forgot to slide, but he was safe anyway. It was a successful night.
