June 4

Tuesday night, OLeif got busy in the kitchen making a butterscotch pie.
“Oh, how sweet,” Collette told him. “You’re becoming domestic. Would you like to make dinner tomorrow night?”
OLeif frowned.
Carrie had another funny teaser that morning.
“So I was telling Lucia about these parasites that dig into the top of your head and bury themselves underneath your scalp. And Lucia starts ringing her hands and crying, ‘Who does that kind of thing?!’ As if they were people or something.”
Meanwhile, Puck rummaged in his grandma’s spice cabinet until Mom brought out an old typewriter for him to use. Puck thought this was brilliant and had fun punching on the keys.
“Well, Mom,” Carrie was saying, “You ruined one of the best dreams I’ve had, ever. And you come in, like you always do, and say, ‘Kids, I’ve let you sleep in a whole hour this morning. It’s already ten till seven!’”
“I did not, Carrie,” Mom laughed. “It was ten after eight.”
Puck was learning new things.
“Linnea said that he said ‘luigi’,” said Mom. “He’s quite a refined baby. He’s knows ‘roses’ and ‘luigi’.”
Later that afternoon, while Puck napped, Collette asked Rose to change Puck if he woke up early.
“No, I can’t!” Rose wailed. “Not again.”
“I will never change a diaper,” Joe sang from Rose’s room.
So Mom, Collette, and the boys drove off to Costco while Carrie began to re-haul the basement, again, and Linnea went swimming at Gretyl’s house.
While at the store, Joe asked for a container of special cinnamon to keep at his coffee station downstairs. While he talked it over with Mom, Collette walked over to the next aisle to look for soy milk.
“No soy milk!” Joe protested, when he found out. “We can’t allow you to feed Puck that nasty stuff.”
“Nope,” Frances agreed, and sat on the stack of boxes.
In the end, however, Collette brought back a refrigerated box of organic vanilla soy milk, as much as she would never try it herself. There were hopes that Puck would end up a healthier human being than herself.
Then Joe picked up a box of 600lb. Gorillas (vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies).
That evening, Collette and Puck returned in the suddenly hot weather to bake a sweet potato pie for dinner.
