Let the Games Begin

Friday, August 8, 2008

It was the opening of another Olympic games. The last time the world had come to play together was right before OLeif’s and Collette’s wedding. It had already been that long. To celebrate, Collette bought a box of fudge brownies for a dollar when she and Puck were on their errands that morning. Puck, who was always in the mood for tasties, ignored the baked goods packed in boxes, and cried out for the fruits and vegetables.
“Rah!” he yelled.
“Young man,” Collette scolded him.
To avoid his impulse to eat the bagged produce raw, she allowed him to hold the honey mustard and the kitchen sponges while they completed their journey through the grocery store. This satisfied Puck’s curiosity.
In the afternoon, Collette and Puck took a walk around the neighborhood.
At dinner, Puck chewed his peas in thoughtful concentration while OLeif taught him card tricks.
“Pick a card,” he told Collette.
Collette did so, showed it to Puck, and inserted it back into the middle of the stack. After OLeif had done some fancy shuffling, he held out the deck to Puck. Puck slipped out his chubby hand and withdrew the top card.
“Is that your card?” OLeif asked.
It was. Puck smiled and continued to eat his peas.
