Lightening Cometh

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Wednesday, Puck solicited Linnea’s assistance in running through the house with him crying out, “Blum! Blum! Blum!” For breakfast he read his word cards, reciting which words did, or did not, eat peanuts.
“Moon doesn’t eat peanuts,” he said, shaking his head. “Turtles eat peanuts.”
And the little monster had been busy that week. Two things broken over the course of a few days: Collette’s glass bangle, and the red poppy bowl she had purchased from Garden Ridge before she was married. Half her breakables were waiting for repair in the library. One of those days, she would repair them all.
Back at the house, Puck was sitting on the counter smacking his lips from the taste of brown sugar that Carrie-Bri had given him. They were busy making oatmeal cookies. Puck was mixing up the goods. And Carrie caught him just in time before he dumped in the entire box of baking soda.
Carrie then made him two drums out of oatmeal containers after she refrigerated the dough.
About 11:30, the mail arrived, bringing with it a 12” Doctor Who doll, which Puck liked. He also liked stomping on the sheet of accompanying bubble wrap.
As the skies darkened, and Francis went on the Katy with Creole and Puff ‘o Lump, Collette wrapped up more mathematics with Linnea, who used a pencil wrapped in purple suede. And Mom had left for the Tecumseh’s for lunch. Apparently they were having tuna fish.
Severe storms were on the menu that day.
That evening, Collette joined Aunt Petunia, Mom, Carrie-Bri, and Lucia over at the house for cheese sticks, popcorn chicken, barbecued wings, and chocolate Oreo cake while OLeif practiced music at church.
Rose and Lucia were razzing each other about various nondescript guys.
Rose began:
“Lucia and all the guys she likes, sittin’ in a tree…”
“Sounds like good times,” Lucia replied with a grin. “Except that wouldn’t work. ‘Cause then they’d all know about each other.”
Then Carrie added her two cents.
“No, it’s more like Lucia and her cellphone sittin’ in a tree. T-E-X-T-I-N-G!”
“That was awesome!” Lucia exclaimed, giving Carrie a high five, as the room erupted in laughter.
OLeif and Collette drove home that night under skies splitting with lightening, and discussed foreign accents.
And Carrie thought she was probably recovering from a brown recluse bite. The girl who had also, according to the doctor, possibly contracted the West Nile virus, and had been inadvertently struck by lightening.
