Lightening Day

Friday, May 8, 2009

It was the perfect sort of day. It had stormed loudly the previous evening shortly after the kids had left from comedy night in the slightly muggy night air and June bugs.
Then came Friday — quiet, dark blues, brilliant greens, and deep gray skies. Followed the rain and the thunder, and the wind, orange-glow lamps at the house over a breakfast of pancakes, bacon, and eggs prepared by Mom, as Dad was just back from Iowa.
Linnea and Puck built a tent under the piano keys with blankets and a lamp while Collette worked out the algebra with Francis.
Huge cracks of lightening rocked the neighborhood as the lunch hour approached.
Meanwhile, Linnea was preparing to leave for a weekend of camping with the Plum family, also accompanied by John Smith, out in the slop and the rain.
That afternoon, Puck did more finger-painting with Carrie, and helped her wrap presents in shiny silver paper while they shared a bag of popcorn discs.
When Dad was offered some of these snacks, he replied with a no thank you.
“I love caramel-covered Styrofoam,” he joked.
That evening, Collette rejoined the girls back at the house for classic Doctor Who night, with ice cream drumsticks.
