Collette woke from dreams where enormous end-of-the-world lighted blue thunderbirds flapped in stormy night skies. She woke, half-thinking it was real, assuming that someone had projected images of thunderbirds against the black clouds. Then she really woke up and realized that there had been no giant thunderbirds at all.
Joe arrived shortly before eight to work on more math. He had brought an egg McMuffin, after asking Collette if they had wanted anything while he was out. Collette declined, but Joe shared a few pieces with the Puck. Then he wadded up the wrapper.
“Watch this, Puck,” he said, and tossed it into the spinning ceiling fan.
It fell back to Earth, unharmed. Joe tried it three more times. Same result.
“Your fan is stupid,” he joked.
The fifth try worked, ricocheting the wad to the other side of the room.
Then Puck tried his hand at it giving an:
“A!”
…every time he tossed it up in the air.
Then while Collette worked with Joe, Puck examined his birthday toys, speaking what sounded like Icelandic to himself.
“Ser ot,” he mumbled to himself.
Although the morning had been warm, Collette was cold after sitting on the front porch with the happy Puck and his afternoon snack. Puck rubbed noses with her while he chomped on his puffies.
Later in the afternoon, Collette and Puck played some bouncy ball and read “The Kiwi Who Lost Its Mum”. Puck spent most of his day walking and tumbling.
