May Day

Friday, May 1, 2009

First day in May. May day. Or mayday. It all depended on how people saw the world that day.
More grayness. More rain. Billowing green and white blossoms in the woods. It was all so beautiful.
Carrie was returning from Colorado that night, and had requested one of her favorites: a Red Robin Blue Burger upon touchdown.
In the afternoon, almost everyone was gone. Mom and Linnea at the English’s, Joe running errands, Rose at work, and Francis out with his buddies. And Collette and Puck sat on the couch together, Puck with his cars, while the thunder rumbled in across the green, and the rain washed in.
Earlier, Mom had hot-glued googly eyes to his other vacuum, and his “bus” (dust buster) so that all of his vacuums had eyeballs.
Back home that evening, while OLeif put batteries in Puck’s vacuum, Puck found Collette’s collection of bangles.
“Circles!” he cried happily. “Mama put on circles!”
He handed her each bracelet, one at a time, putting them on her wrist.
Then he heard the sound of his little vacuum running and raced into the other room to inspect. He was pleased with this new development: the lights, the spinning confetti balls, and the sound it made while running across the carpet.
Then OLeif left for a senior photo shoot at work for a guy who was half-Korean, half-Irish, and Joe came over for advice on papers and some cover art for Collette’s next book.
And from back in Puck’s room, where the chubby wasn’t feeling all so tired…
“Naughty Fatty!” Puck bellowed. “Fatty, naughty!”
Collette walked in after awhile to see Puck sitting up in his crib scolding his stuffed Fatty.
