Mom's Celebration

Sunday, November 29, 2009

It was time to officially celebrate Mom’s birthday. So on that cool, gray, rainy morning, after church, Collette picked up a Tippin’s key lime pie and a Dierberg’s cookies and cream cake, and a bunch of pale pink-gold roses.
Then Mom opened her gift from Gloria: a family heirloom white porcelain cameo box, which she loved.
This was followed with a playing card throwing war between OLeif and Francis.

In the afternoon, Rose and Linnea were busy throwing out stuff from their room, with help from OLeif. Rose carted out box-loads.
“Hey, did you guys try my wholegrain Cheez-Its?” she asked.
“Wholegrain Cheez-Its?” Francis exclaimed. “First in my bread. Now in my Cheez-Its? It’s like a disease!”

That evening, Carrie returned from her events of the day just in time for Mom’s delicious meatloaf, roasted squash, and Hawaiian rolls.
During the meal, there were the usual shenanigans. This included discussing the aspects of Scientology and laughing about aliens, and making Puck sing for his cake, which Linnea brought out with a giant red candle stuck in the center.
Then OLeif and Carrie thought they saw a strange sort of fireball shoot upward from one of the candles on the table.
“Looked like a laser beam,” said OLeif.
“Oh,” said Dad, looking over his shoulder, “they’re after me.”

This was followed with gifts for Mom, including:
– the third season of Tales from Avonlea on DVD
– a certificate to have her chair reupholstered
– an outing with Dad to Forest Park for a shrimp boil at the boat house, which included:
– white bean soup
– jumbo shrimp
– andouille sausage
– potatoes
– cornbread
– and cinnamon ice cream with pralines
followed by ice skating, also in Forest Park, all of which she loved of course.

And then Dad brought Francis to youth group. And Joe joined Magnus for the evening.

It seemed like it was all a good birthday.
