No Doubt About It
Monday, November 20, 2006
A cold day where the heater in the car was once again not working. It seemed to kick off and on in a temperamental manner during the cold months.
That afternoon, OLeif and Collette found out that the little White baby was a boy.
“No doubt about it,” the nurse said, watching the ultrasound.
“It’s a boy, it’s a boy, it’s a boy,” OLeif chanted in a whisper as they sat in the waiting room between the ultrasound and doctor’s appointment. Once again, the nurse (a different nurse from the first time) commented on the baby’s chubby tummy, and at only eleven ounces.
“So….” Dr. Brazil looked over the charts later. “You had your ultrasound and you’re going to be having…”
“A boy,” OLeif finished, standing behind him.
“That’s what I’m talking about!” Dr. Brazil turned around to give OLeif a big high five.
Minutes later Dr. Brazil received three frantic pages, back to back.
“Well, gotta run here,” he bellowed in his usual loud manner, “We’ll just check the baby’s heart beat. Gotta go deliver a baby. The mom’s having her sixth. Delivered her fourth in her own truck.”
And off he went.
Meanwhile, OLeif called Denae, then Theodore, then they dropped by the house where Mom heard and was happy all over again, the kids, Dad, Mom called Aunt Petunia, Grandma Combs, the Englishs, then Lucia called for Collette…
“I am so excited!” Lucia squealed. “No, no, you don’t even know. I am sitting here with the biggest smile on my face! I just can’t wait to give you a big hug on Saturday.”
Linnea, who had formerly been convinced that the baby was going to be a girl, heard the news for the first time. Her eyes narrowed. She had already told Collette that she wanted to teach the baby everything from the alphabet, to mathematics, to… well, she would let Frances teach it how to read. She didn’t want to teach it how to read.
“Well,” she said, putting her hands on her hips, “it’s going to take longer to teach him.”
Linnea had obviously been relying on female brains. But Collette assured her that it was alright for her to still teach a baby boy, and Linnea agreed.
“And you can still play with him,” Collette added.
“Just don’t put him in dresses,” OLeif warned, shaking a finger at her.
“I won’t,” Linnea giggled.
“I’m going to teach it how to shoot air-soft guns,” Frances grinned.
Joe raised two arms in the air for victory, when he heard the news. “Yesssss.”
“I told you,” Rose settled herself on the couch, crossing her arms. “You had to have a boy.”
